Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Hennesys Disla, Founder of ArmHug, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

My business is an e-commerce medical supply business. I love what I do because I used to work in the hospital as a phlebotomist, and I saw a problem and was really focused on solving it. I started to make drawings and innovate in the office because I wanted to do better with patients and have an organized blood draw procedure. I built custom kits for the patients and started to see that this could help all clinics and hospitals in the state. Rather than waiting for people to make a change, I set out to help make it easier for phlebotomists to keep their jobs with a convenient kit. My customers are nurses and phlebotomists who are doing mobile blood draws and are going to the patient's home to complete their Telehealth visits or at-home lab visits.

Tell us about yourself

I love working in healthcare because it is a challenge. I also enjoy helping people. I knew I had to help make some improvements after seeing my colleagues struggle at the job. When I took the leap, that motivated me to make new connections and learn new things. I also got the opportunity to build a product that can help someone improve their time at their job. That makes me feel great that I can help someone, so they don't have to struggle like I did each and every day at work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is being able to make my customer's life easier. We are a big component in the medical supply chain, and our option is more affordable and easy to use, and I am more than grateful for all the support and encouragement we have received from all of our customers.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I think one of the most difficult things about being a business owner is knowing when to say 'no' to all the opportunities that come your way. I have struggled with that, but this year I started to acknowledge my strengths and gained a better understanding on what to prioritize.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Always ask if you don't know, don't be shy. You never know what you can do if you don't ask.
  2. Communicate with your team; reaching out to someone for clarification or help is a strength.
  3. Find your niche; everyone has a gift. Do more of it, and you will be surprised at how far it will take you.
