Therapy for this thing called LIFE - Aretha Hampton

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Aretha Hampton, Founder of Roots Therapy and Consultation Services, located in Berkeley, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I operate a mental health company where I provide therapy to individuals and families looking to change their relationships and communication.

Tell us about yourself

I am a licensed clinical social worker and professor. I love being a change agent! I began my career working in elementary schools as a counselor and saw how effective therapeutic relationships could impact change on the individual and community level spurred my desire to become a social worker. So much so that I transitioned from medical social work to opening up a private practice so that I could really deepen my work as a change agent when I am providing therapeutic support or teaching a class and seeing people have their 'aha moments" where they are learning and becoming the person they want to keep me motivated.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has been helping other business owners launch their practice which is an act of passion and freedom.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

As a business owner, it is just you, so it is necessary to have a team of people that you trust around you. As a social worker, I was not trained in business practices such as bookkeeping and marketing. It required a different part of my brain, and therefore I had to take classes and seminars to understand how to run a business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

One, create a support network. These are people who have done what you want to do and can be used as a frame of reference and oversight. Secondly, take classes and seminars to learn how to operate and manage your business's finances. Thirdly, keep a calendar and or planner and set small goals with a timeline. This keeps your focus on what you need to do for yourself and your business and supports decreasing running the risk of imposter syndrome and comparing yourself to others.
