Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anne Watson, a business strategy coach, based in Dallas, TX, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a business strategy coach for female entrepreneurs looking to inspire others. You don't have to have a business degree to succeed. You need to get clear on a couple of foundational principles that will keep you focused, help you create a strategy, and start seeing results. I help you sift through all the ideas, find the gold, and turn it into something you can grow for years to come. I like to say I help you think like a business so you can inspire like a boss!

Tell us about yourself

I have a background in advertising and banking, so business and marketing come fairly easily to me. I love sharing what I know with people who dream of building something significant but are faced with fears, doubts, and overwhelm. There is nothing like breaking down complicated concepts for people in a way that they not only understand but can also take that info and run with it. My favorite thing to hear is, "That was so much easier than I thought!" It doesn't need to be complicated to work.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. I am most proud that I have a never give up attitude. I didn't start making money until my third year in business. There were plenty of opportunities for discouragement to get the best of me, but I know what I am doing matters to people. By continuing to take messy action and believing in myself, I've grown my business to a profitable, sustainable model that I am excited to share with others.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staying motivated when you don't see the results you want. We live in an immediate gratification culture that doesn't reward patience. Every entrepreneur needs to develop systems for staying motivated and focused on the days when it's hard - and there are plenty of those days. If you stay consistent, patient, and focused, you will see results.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

For people looking to start a new venture as an entrepreneur, you have to:

  1. Get clear about your vision and your mission. Where do you want to go, and how do you want to get there? This step is critical for building a strong foundation.
  2. Know your ideal client better than they know themselves. This means understanding your customer's pain points and their unspoken pain points so you can develop the solution to their problem. That's what people pay for.
  3. Pick an offer, product, or program and work on that consistently without adding other stuff. You have to give one idea a chance to take off.

Stay focused and committed.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Don't be afraid to invest in yourself and your dream by hiring a coach. Sometimes all it takes is a fresh set of eyes to help you see how all your ideas work together. You can reduce overwhelm, get clarity, and see faster results when you spend some time and money with people who've been where you are and are willing to share what they know.
