Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Anna Liza Smith, Network Management Systems Administrator of UC San Diego, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I work at UC San Diego under the Enterprise Architecture & Infrastructure group that delivers central computing to the campus community. Our clients consist of students, faculty, staff, hospitals, and pretty much anyone who needs access to the campus network infrastructure.

Tell us about yourself

I graduated from UC San Diego as a film major, but I have always been interested in computing ever since my first computing class in a junior high Magnet program when I was exposed to MS-DOS. Watching the evolution of emerging technologies and just being curious is what motivates me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment in this field is the gratification of finding solutions to complex network issues.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things in this field is coming into a system without prior knowledge and having to build it or fix it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

The top three tips for anyone getting into this field are:

  1. You need to be passionate, so if you can't do that, look for something else.
  2. Be resourceful. You don't need to know everything, just where to find it.
  3. More heads are better than one. If you get stuck, don't be afraid to get help. Sometimes it just takes another pair of eyes.
