Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in pet care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with David Parenteau, owner of Animal vert, located in Montréal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are the first eco-responsible pet store in Quebec province. Knowing that there is a wide range of pet products on the market and information about them, we have made it our mission to offer only the real thing! Whether in our products, services, or expert advice, we focus on authenticity and transparency through everything we offer. Just like you, your pets deserve the best. We believe that your companions are worthy of a healthy and balanced lifestyle. That is why we offer personalized service that adapts to the reality of each of them. We currently have three branches in Montreal.
Tell us about yourself
I've been in the animal business since I was a teenager. When I saw the lack of natural, organic, and eco-responsible products in pet stores, I decided to create Animal vert to respond to this lack. Every day, I seek to improve animal welfare through the choice of our products. I am trained in canine nutrition, and I continue to train every day. I stay on the cutting edge of new trends and studies in animal nutrition. I also work to reduce the ecological impact of our pets by choosing our products and reducing packaging.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I believe that my greatest pride is to have greatly contributed to putting healthy food for animals as well as eco-responsible products at the forefront. We were among the very first to promote raw food for dogs and cats. We were also the first pet shop to put eco-responsibility in our main values. Nowadays, all the big chain stores have been inspired by us. This may seem annoying, but in fact, it is a very great accomplishment because the animals and the planet come out winners.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me is stress management and trying not always to work.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have a healthy lifestyle.
- See and think long-term by not being discouraged by a bad day.
- Surround yourself with a good team.
