Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Angelika Sadar, Owner of Sadar Psychological and Sports Center, located in Trooper, PA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Sadar Psychological and Sports Center is a psychology practice that offers training to other professionals in neurofeedback to help them become board certified and to develop their own practice in neurofeedback. Our clinic offers functional EEG and other evaluations to assess how the brain's functioning is related to the patient's concerns. We are like a primary care office for psychology, offering neurofeedback, biofeedback, and referral services to our patients.

Tell us about yourself

As a child who immigrated to the USA with my mother, I have watched all my relatives run their own businesses (painter, bricklayer, machinist, baker, etc.), so I guess I expected to run my own business. When I was not able to find a job that suited my scheduling needs when I had young children, it made sense to begin setting up a private practice to offer psychological services. After 15 years of providing traditional therapy, I became aware of being able to measure brain waves in order to retrain them. This was very exciting, as it provided a way to work directly with a person's brain, rather than teaching them how to "cope with a brain that is inefficient and causing disturbances such as ADHD, Trauma, etc." Once I began studying the brain, a fascinating door was opened and has led to endless ways to learn more about the brain that guides our life. So, helping people and continually learning how to improve my skills is what motivates me!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Over the years, I have worked with thousands of patients and taught hundreds of students. In this process, I have sold my company and built a new one several times. Being able to help others with a better understanding and retraining of the brain has been extremely satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

My employees are integral to the success of the company. Creating a team that shares the same vision and engages in the same hard work can be challenging.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Grow at a pace that allows you to deliver first-class service.
  2. Treat your employees like your family.
  3. Consider your customers your boss - without them, you would not have a job.
