What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Faith Deconstruction Coach who helps people untangle from toxic religion without pressuring them to believe what I believe.
Tell us about yourself
I've been 100% online for over a decade. I started an online women's ministry and then, after being quite successful, opened a social media and consulting agency to help others do the same.
After entering a lengthy season of deconstruction, I began shifting my efforts to supporting others who are deconstructing and providers (coaches, pastors, bloggers, etc.) who support people in deconstruction.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The best part about the work I do is seeing people create the life they want, not the life that others say they should have. Watching people embrace their ability to choose and to really love themselves is so much fun. It's not easy, but it's unbelievably rewarding.
Creating an online community for people feeling isolated during their deconstruction is something I'm really proud of. Hosting the Deconstructing Faith Summit for the last two years is also something great that we are doing. We have been able to bring a ton of different speakers and panelists together to let attendees know that they're not alone.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It can be really isolating to work in a virtual space. I have an amazing team, but we are scattered all over the country, so it's challenging to stay connected on a personal level. There's also a lot of pressure right now to meet the needs in the deconstructing community, which is just exploding. So many people are doubting and are completely disenchanted by the rise of Christian nationalism over the last several years.
The work we are doing is trauma recovery, and it's taxing to carry that weight and juggle all the pressures of owning a business. Throw in being a mom and wife and doing my own inner work, and my schedule gets pretty full!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Don't listen to everyone at the same time. It's too overwhelming, and because there's more than one way to do things, it will be confusing. Just pick one expert to learn from and get fluent in what they teach. Then you can pick another topic you want to learn about and find someone to learn from.
- Do your own work, and don't bring your unhealed trauma into your business. You can be a success without healing, but ignoring your unhealed spaces will harm others. Your business will not save you, so don't expect it to. Get the therapy, coaching, and bodywork you need to be fully present in your business without becoming co-dependent with it.
- Give yourself time. Every overnight success story you hear about is someone who has been working hard on the DL for a long time or was born on 3rd base. Don't pressure yourself to be perfect and hustle yourself into exhaustion. Entrepreneur burnout is REAL, especially when you work in a trauma recovery space where the need always outnumbers the resources. You don't have to be the tortoise or the hare. Find YOUR rhythm and settle into it for the long haul.
