What's your business, and who are your customers?
As an educational and professional consultant, I help individuals, especially Hispanic first-generation graduate students, to pursue and achieve their academic and professional goals through individual coaching, digital courses, workshops, and other personalized services. Our customers are college students who need guidance and mentoring to achieve their academic goals. We assist students in various ways, from tutoring and the development of personal and research statements to applying for graduate programs and editing doctoral projects. We also facilitate interactive workshops in academic and professional development at schools, universities, and nonprofit organizations. Any professional individual looking to advance their career can benefit from our programs and services, as we are focused on professional development.
Tell us about yourself
I am a first-generation college graduate who successfully earned a doctoral degree while working two jobs. I have 10 years of professional experience working at a federal agency as a statistician and at higher education institutions as an adjunct professor. My academic qualifications include a doctoral degree in Health Sciences, specializing in Health Education and Global Health, as well as a Master's degree in Public Health, with a focus on Biostatistics. I am passionate about assisting Latina students in achieving their academic and professional goals, and it is my primary objective to support their success in every way possible. For many years, I have been the only Latina woman in my academic department and office. Increasing the representation of Latina women in academia and leadership is crucial for many reasons. Data show the lack of representation of Latina women in academia and leadership. For example, Latinas made up only 2.2% of full-time professors and instructors in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields in 2017. Similarly, Hispanic women earned only 2.8% of all doctoral degrees awarded in the US in 2019. These numbers demonstrate that there is a long way to go to achieve true diversity and inclusion in academia and leadership. By actively working to increase the representation of Latina women in these fields, we can help to ensure that everyone has an equal opportunity to contribute their talents, ideas, and perspectives to society. Therefore, I am proud of representing professional Latina women and supporting others in reaching their academic and professional goals.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
To enjoy working towards my mission of increasing the representation of Latina professionals in academia and leadership positions. As an advocate for education, one of my goals is to underscore the importance and value of pursuing higher education. I firmly believe that aligning an individual's personal and professional goals with their preferred educational program is the key to success for students.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Time management. As a business owner, you must perform many roles, such as your own boss, admin assistant, social media strategist, web developer, accountant person, and many other roles!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand you're why: If you know your root cause or real reason for starting and growing your business, it will motivate you to continue working towards your goals even in difficult times.
- Develop a business plan: Stating your mission, vision, values, and objectives will help you to prioritize your resources. Also, it is important to understand that the business plan is a working document, and it can be edited as needed. But your business plan should be implemented as best as you can.
- Get connected with other entrepreneurs and business owners: Not everyone has the right mindset to support and understand your challenges and accomplishments. Once you are surrounded by the right people, your creativity flows, and your impact increases.
