Optimizing How You Move and Function - Dr. Andy Noel

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Andy Noel, Founder of Motiv Physical Therapy & Performance, located in Greenville, SC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I'm a physical therapist that helps active adults ages 30-60 with pain and performance. I help people with pain get back to doing the things they love by optimizing their movement and improving their performance. I help people both locally in Greenville, SC, and online.

Tell us about yourself

A traditional physical therapy clinic is in an insurance-based model. To satisfy the ever-complicated revenue and expenses equation, you must see patients and clients several times over several months to be profitable. This can lead to patients coming three days a week for three months or more. These patients often only see a therapist for 30 minutes and are passed off to a rehab aide for the last 30 minutes to complete their appointment. This wasn't exactly the care I envisioned providing when I decided to become a physical therapist. What motivates me is providing care to people in less time drawn out over months and fewer in-person visits. Maybe even care provided remotely. I want to see a client one time and then not again for another 2-3 weeks as they navigate exercises and coaching through an app. Through constant touch points throughout their service with me on the app, they should be developing skills for independence, not reliance on me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment was taking the first step and believing that I could do this. It's still a work in progress, but to me, that has been the biggest accomplishment thus far.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing to do is trying not to think about the business.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

I'm still figuring this out myself, but the top 3 tips are to build relationships first, not just your typical networking, and actually and genuinely care about building relationships and not selling. If the person aligns with your niche or market, they will come around eventually; if they don't, they will bring someone to you. Create systems that allow you to leverage your time. Surround yourself with people who will build you up.
