What's your business, and who are your customers?

Tell us about yourself
I am a coffee and unsweet tea drinker, documentary watcher, and daydreamer. When I am not photographing or editing images, I enjoy immersing myself in nature. I believe nature keeps me grounded in my core values. As your Fort Worth Dallas portrait & wedding photographer, I have photographed families & love stories professionally since 2008. My motivation for doing so is to preserve memories not only for my clients but for the generations to come.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Besides business awards received in the past, serving my community for over a decade and continuing to grow both personally and professionally are my biggest accomplishments in an ongoing economy that is very uncertain for small business owners.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the hardest things for a small business owner is conveying to potential clients/consumers that a small business’ pricing reflects their cost of doing business. And a small business that is profitable will most likely not have pricing lower than big box chain stores. Unlike these big box chain stores, a small business doesn’t have bulk buying power. Often, I read and see consumers expecting a low-end deal just because they are purchasing from an entrepreneur. But to the contrary, an entrepreneur will focus on quality versus quantity.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
For anyone looking to start a small business today, I would highly advise them to do the following:
- Take a few business courses at their local community college or even online. Learn all the ins and out of running a business and how to stay profitable.
- Research their target market, network with that target market, and price accordingly.
- Set your business up for success! Invest in business insurance and create sustainable business policies and stick with them. The consumer is NOT always right. Your business policies should outline how your business operates and what consumers should expect from your services. Business policies should be a lawful roadmap for both you and your consumers when it comes to making business decisions. Without solid business policies, you could be setting your business up for legal issues down the road.
