Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in jewelry but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Olson, founder of Amy Olson Jewelry, located in Portland, OR, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Hello! My business is Amy Olson Jewelry, and I make delicate, handcrafted jewelry for women who want to feel empowered and grounded in the everyday.

Tell us about yourself

I have been making jewelry for well over two decades. Inspired by my grandmother, who was a professional craftsman, jewelry was a craft that I learned at a young age and am still intrigued by it today. There seems to be an endless amount to learn in the jewelry field, which keeps me intrigued and inspired to continue my journey in this field. But the thing that motivates me the most is the people I get to connect with who purchase my jewelry. Building those relationships is the greatest reward.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am self-taught, and seeing my aesthetic expand and elevate is one thing I'm definitely proud of. Along with that, the stores I've worked with throughout the years and the relationships that have grown over time are something I'm honored to be a part of and grateful for every day.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing for me is balancing social time with work time. As of now, I am still the only one doing all the jobs, and it can be a bit lonely. As an extrovert, that's my biggest challenge. But I have a wonderful community of business friends, and seeing them on a regular basis has been so helpful, especially during the busy seasons.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Take a business class- learning the basics of business will be so helpful when growing a sustainable business. I didn't do that and sure wish I had!
  2. Seek community- it can be intimidating to be vulnerable in that way, but if you seek them, you are guaranteed to find wonderful people who want to share insights and encourage each other.
  3. Be clear on who you are serving, and remember you are not for everybody- once you are clear on who your customer or client will be, everything will come a little easier. Marketing, communication, content... just remember who you're serving as you become more visible and grow your brand.
