What's your business, and who are your customers?

I do pet sitting and dog walking. Taking care of pets in their own home. Giving their owners peace of mind while working or traveling.

Tell us about yourself

I did pet sitting as a teenager. When I left a 30-year career in retail, I wanted to do something I could enjoy. My love of animals and ensuring their health and safety is important to me.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Client referrals. Knowing that they appreciate me, express their gratitude, and refer me to their friends, family, and others through social media.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

I work seven days a week, morning through evening. There are some very long work times. It can be physically and mentally exhausting.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do your research for the work you plan to do. For example, there is a lot of driving with pet sitting; over the years, I have reduced my territory and had to say goodbye to some lovely clients.
  2. Growing your business may vary depending on the type, but I believe in referrals: friends, family, and local businesses. Let them know what your business is about. And be sure to reciprocate.
  3. For all the time and effort you put into your business, schedule time for yourself. No one knows you better than you. If you don't take time to recharge, you will burn out.
