Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Gernaat, Owner of Amy G Vitality, located in Houston, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
Amy G Vitality is coaching and mentorship for women business leaders desiring to move out of the cycles of burnout and into deeply nourished health, life and wealth. My work focuses on bringing your body on board with your business as a cornerstone of your creation by working with your natural rhythms instead of shoving you into the hustle and grind culture. My mission is to create not just healthy but Well Nourished Women.
Tell us about yourself
I began my business in functional nutrition after healing myself from chronic digestion, hormone, sinus, and fatigue issues. After a debilitating illness in 2015, I deeply explored how physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual stress affect women. I realized during this time that I had been living a half-life following a pre-determined script. I spent the next four years on a journey to take deep care of myself in all areas transforming my health, relationships, business, and how I would grow my business. All in honor of how I naturally operate, my unique rhythms, and my personal growth to create an overflow to support the women who come into my world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating a business for women to come home to themselves. In a world where there is so much pressure to be a certain way or fulfill certain criteria not only as a woman but as a businesswoman and how much it harms our bodies to operate in ways we are not designed for, I wanted a space for women to create a new path, body, life, business, and wealth. A way that deeply honors them and therefore deeply supports them. My business has changed and grown so much over the years, and being open to the changes has allowed me to create something unique and transformational. My biggest accomplishment truly has been staying with myself through the process.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Self-trust, hands down. There have been so many times I've wondered what I was doing or thought I should just throw in the towel, or questioned my skills. Every day I choose myself even when it's challenging, even when it appears like nothing is working, and even when everything is amazing. I have to make a choice each day. That's how I build trust. I stay the course.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find a mentor sooner rather than later. I spent way too much time as a lone wolf early in my business, making everything more difficult and taking much longer than needed. Find someone who has walked that path you desire to take and allow them to support you. Be a beginner and learn how to run a business, not just provide your product/service. It's a different skill set!
- Take impeccable care of yourself. Choose yourself and your well-being every day. Make it a priority every day. Make it a foundational piece of your business. Your body, mind, emotions, and spirit are going to experience everything you do in your business. Have them on your advisory board. Tend to them deeply and listen to them daily.
- Create a support system. Seek out people with a similar vision—some that are at the same place and some that are ahead. Create ways to support one another. Don't be afraid to ask for support. It's a superpower to ask for and receive what you need.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
How well you take care of yourself matters. How well you tend to yourself and your needs daily matters. It's a priority. Choose yourself over and over and over again, and your business will grow and flourish in ways that are healthy, nourishing, and sustainable. The next wave of women business owners is done being swallowed up by their businesses and cycling in and out of burnout to keep things afloat. They want to experience life instead of sacrificing it on the altar of their dreams. There is no sacrifice when you put yourself first. You first, everything else lines up to support you.
