What's your business, and who are your customers?

I provide a curriculum to teens and young adults exploring sexual assault awareness and personal safety. Be Strong, Be Wise works primarily with schools and youth organizations that want to offer the curriculum to their students. We also have a train-the-trainer program for educators and a workshop for parents.

Tell us about yourself

I've been a psychotherapist for 25 years and have worked extensively with survivors of sexual assault. When my daughter was assaulted in 2019, I changed my focus and used my training and experience as a youth advocate and parenting coach to help the cause of sexual assault prevention. As a survivor, parent and educator, I see how needed this cause is and am thrilled to know that my curriculum "works."

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Hearing from a large high school we worked with that sexual misconduct declined school-wide (700 students!) after bringing in the Be Strong, Be Wise course for youth and train the trainer.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

The fear people have in discussing hard topics like sexual assault.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Maintain your self-care.
  2. Keep a support system (mentors and friends) in place to help guide you.
  3. Be patient with the process and your place in it.
