Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amy Anaiz, Owner of Amy Anaiz Photography, located in New York, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Amy Anaiz Photography is an intimate editorial wedding + portrait photography studio.

Tell us about yourself

My professional journey began as a talent agent for New York City's top still-life and beauty photographers, where I learned the ins and outs of advertising and commercial photography and was surrounded by beautiful images on a daily basis. While representing these top-talent photographers, I masterfully integrated this knowledge and experience into my own business and refined my skills as a photographer.

I'm keen on creating beautiful, joyous, and heartfelt imagery that tells a story. My style is focused on connecting with my subjects and capturing the emotion and personality of everyone I work with while using beautiful, flattering light, paying close attention to detail, and ensuring the images are clean. I enjoy creating portraits of couples that have a visual impact because your eyes are drawn to their deep expressions and deliberate placement — similar to what you see in magazines. I love to travel and live life by Paolo Coelho's words: "It's the possibility of having a dream come true that makes life interesting!"

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My work has been featured in the New York Times, Brides, BuzzFeed, Inside Weddings, Huffington Post, NY Weddings magazine, The Knot, VH1, E!, HBO Latino, TLC, Essence, Grace Ormonde, and Style Me Pretty, amongst others.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being my own boss and having to navigate all the nuances that come with that.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Make sure to have your "systems" of how to run your business set up as early as possible. Having clear guidelines will help keep you organized.
  2. Delegate - Hire people or seek out programs/applications that will help you manage day-to-day tasks. Don't try to be the master of all.
  3. Accounting - Hire a bookkeeper/accountant to keep all your financials in order. Use Quickbooks self-employed to keep all your itemized transactions organized.
