Get Conversations Rolling - Amorus

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in technology and innovation but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Elizabeth Dell, Founder of Amorus, located in Los Angeles, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Amorus is Romance and Games for Couples. We are an iOS app and card game to play, discover, and get delicious with your chosen partner. Our games help uncover shared fantasies, start sexy new conversations, or just send a pic as a blurry puzzle that your boo has to solve to see! All in a private, encrypted, 1-to-1 platform.

Tell us about yourself

I was a film producer for many years - I made DESTINATION WEDDING with Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder (among others). I was a storyteller, focused on telling my stories to the world. Amorus is all about storytelling too, helping couples tell their stories to each other.

It's so powerful and empowering to give and receive pleasure - I want to enable that for everyone. We all deserve to be seen and loved. I love that I help with that every day and through delicious fun and play!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

It's been such a wild ride. Just getting the app launched and accepted into the App Store was a crazy goal. And then it was life! And then we had 1000 users. And then 5000 users. And we just keep growing! Every time I check my app stats and see 2000+ messages sent on the app the night before, I get a happy hum in my heart.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Being an entrepreneur, especially in tech, is pretty isolating. There aren't a lot of interactions with people on an everyday basis, and it's not easy to understand the entrepreneur life. So I work hard at building networks and friends among fellow founders!

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Prove it out! Take the time to talk to people about what they want, test the market, and see if there's really an audience for what you're building. Don't be afraid of the Side Hustle. I think there's a big pressure for a founder to be full-time, but if you're still finding what you're doing, keep the paycheck until you do. Running out of money is the biggest company killer, so if you can sustain your idea for a bit longer, great!
  2. Find a tribe. Whether it's fellow founders in your city or in your industry, or of your age, find people with whom you can discuss, vent, and share.
  3. Make sure some of them are farther along, some are adjacent, and some are behind. That way, you can see where you want to go, figure out how to tackle the current hurdles and remember what you've already accomplished along the way.
