Daily Wellness in a Cup - Amoda
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Tegan Woo, founder of Amoda, located in Richmond, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We're a woman-owned brand elevating daily routines with drinkable wellness that supports your energy, stress, and mood. We make delicious adaptogen lattes using matcha, organic herbal extracts, and medicinal mushrooms. We formulate based on science, ancient remedies, and flavours that you'll love. Meaningful amounts that make a difference - no fairy dusting!
Tell us about yourself
I'm Tegan, the founder of Amoda. I started a fun tea subscription box (which we still have!) back in 2012. Selling tea got my foot in the door of the natural products industry, and I realized that tea and other warm drinks meant a lot more to people than just a tasty drink. At the same time, I struggled with stress, anxiety, stomach issues, and a health system throwing band-aids over my health issues. I took a deep dive into herbal remedies and started to find relief through adaptogens and mushrooms. Matcha and tea were already part of my daily routine, so I started adding herbs to my drinks, and our drinkable wellness products were born. I'm motivated every day to help others find relief from stress and anxiety through plants and herbs.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'd say getting our wellness latte mixes into big conventional grocery. We have two products in Save on Foods, which is a Canadian grocery store with about 180 stores. It was a huge accomplishment and a testament not only to the product itself but to the fact that people are wanting to shop for natural health and wellness alongside their daily food and bev essentials. We've always wanted to make natural wellness more accessible, which was a big step towards achieving that goal.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think learning how to be resilient while maintaining a strong sense of self. As a business owner, you get so much thrown at you, and you need to be able to bounce back quickly from difficulties and learn how to be mentally tough while maintaining empathy and taking care of yourself. It's always a work in progress!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Three things I would say would help anyone in all three of those stages of business would be:
- Create a strong morning routine for yourself that grounds you in your day and creates positive energy.
- Check-in regularly to make sure the people you're surrounding yourself with are supporting that energy and who you want to be.
- Take your daily adaptogens to support your body! Stress in business is inevitable, so having some herbs to support your mental and physical health as you navigate that stress is so important.
