Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in candle-making but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amber Crites, owner of Melting Mountains Candle Co, LLC., located in Burleson, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
At Melting Mountains Candle Co, we make pure soy candles, wax melts, and car freshies. We also teach candle-making classes out in Alverado, Tx. We are a small business that started as a therapeutic hobby in navigating an extremely difficult time in life for me.
Tell us about yourself
I started making candles in 2018, right after I had to testify against my dad in a trial that ended up sentencing him to life plus 50 years in prison. Needless to say, I was not prepared for how that was going to impact me. One day while I was on maternity leave, I was scrolling through Pinterest, and I came across this picture of a table full of candles. I immediately called my husband and said, “Hey, what do you think about me making candles” to my surprise, he said, “sure, you can make them, and we can seal them, and it can be a good little side hustle for us.” In complete shock, I said, okay. 😅
Fast forward to today; I now know my husband saw potential when I could barely see what the next 30 minutes would like for me. Today we run and operate Melting Mountains Candle Co with a vision of self-sufficiency and a heart to help others.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner on the professional side is opening up our candle-making classes and connecting with our customers in a whole new way. Personally, my biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to do what I love, help support my family, and being able to be present with my kids all at the same time.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Being a business owner is not for the faint of heart. It has definitely come with its fair share of struggles. One of the hardest things for me personally to deal with is a solid work-life balance. My kids are with me when I work, and my work is with me when I’m at home. So feeling the need to simultaneously interact as mom and boss at the same time is a frequent struggle.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
The top 3 tips I would give anyone is don’t give up even when it seems impossible. Grow slow and steady, so you can adjust accordingly. Invest money each month into a marketing budget.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Even when life seems impossible, God has a wonderful way of creating beauty out of complete darkness.
