Amazing horticulturalist & floral designer - DarkHorse Design
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Lisa Pain, florist of DarkHorse Design, located in Kamloops, BC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a lot of things, floristry (and agriculture) are the seeds, and floral design is the beautiful crop. As a horticulturalist, my passion is growing delightful things. Which the floral designer in me then can run wild with. Creating magical arrangements from glam weddings to holiday decor and everything in-between.
Tell us about yourself
I am a tomboy; I have worked in male dominate careers my whole life. I love it, but don't kid yourself at the root of it all everything begins with dirt. Agriculture pulled me in, horticulture got me hooked, and everything just grew from there. (No pun intended.) I love growing things; each day brings new challenges and also new rewards. It keeps me interested and growing.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
When someone entrusts me to execute their vision, it's an honor. Their special day can be just a Wednesday or a wedding, it's great to bring joy to every day.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
It's hard to ride the wave in a perishable industry. There are many ups and downs. The weather can be tough, the consumer's wants change quickly, and of course, competing against big business, but that is what makes small local businesses shine. Hard work, perseverance, and of course, pretty flowers.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
"What if I fall? Oh, my darling, What if you fly?" E.H. Take the chance. Do what makes you happy. Smile, work hard, nothing is easy, but you'll get there.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Support local small businesses; they are your neighbors, friends, and colleagues. Take care of the beautiful world we live in, and take time to smell the flowers. There are so many more than just roses.
