Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanita M. Nomi, a Transgender Counsellor, based in Halifax, NS, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
As a coach for anyone who might be wondering whether they are transgender, non-binary, or need support during their transition, I have video calls with people from all over the world. Any part of the transition can be a challenge and a blessing at the same time. And we have found that with good support, my clients can soften the hardships and enjoy the blessings better. Some might need help with finding their styles, finding like-minded people, wanting to talk about medical steps or talking through coming out to friends and family, or working through doubts. I'm here to be in their corner.
Tell us about yourself
I have always worked in the social sector. As a teacher, educator, coach, and guidance counselor. When my wife came out to me as trans, I started to soak up every piece of information that I could find that would help her and us during her transition journey. Studying trans issues for several years, loving my wife like crazy, and adding all of this to my education and experience in the social sciences and institutions, has prepared me for this work.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Every time a customer gains more confidence, feels better in their skin, or feels prepared to face a new challenge, I consider it the biggest accomplishment. I have received awards for my work in the education sector, spoken on podcasts, and established the format "Trans Talk" on Twitter, but the individual smiles, the striving of every individual who is experiencing gender euphoria is honestly the biggest reward.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I'm really not great at advertising my service. :-) My webpage can hardly be found in search engines. I don't constantly post on social media about coaching being available. And I find it really difficult to charge for my work. I wish some grants would allow me to offer my services for free, but currently, I still depend on being paid by my clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find out what you're passionate about and what you are good at.
- Find out what the world needs and what can make you a living.
- Find out how to combine all of the above and how to communicate what you do.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
You all know someone who is trans or non-binary. Even though they might not have told you yet. Make sure everyone knows that you'd be a safe person to come out to. And help them and their surroundings find guidance and well-curated information.
