Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in photography but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Soriano, a wedding photographer based in Toronto, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I provide laidback couples with a fun, supportive, and stress-free wedding photography experience. My customers include all couples planning their wedding days.
Tell us about yourself
When I got married in 2018, I struggled to find my perfect wedding photographer. I wanted someone who cared about me as a human, made me feel comfortable in front of the camera, and someone I could vibe with! I also wanted someone who answered my wedding planning questions because the planning was overwhelming! And to be honest, I didn't find exactly who I wanted, and so after my wedding day, I decided to become the wedding photographer I had searched for. A wedding photographer who is fun, has an inclusive and diverse portfolio, and cares about providing a supportive wedding photography experience.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment as a business owner has to be my recent brand and website overhaul. It was an expensive project, but it has allowed me to show up authentically and with lots of excitement! It also better represents who I am and what I represent.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing is finding balance. The balance between taking care of your business and clients, seeing and spending time with friends and family, and investing in yourself and self-care! Making sure to find time for everything can be challenging, but when done correctly, it keeps you going and motivated!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Find community! Join Facebook groups with folks at your level and network locally as much as you can.
- Learn, learn, and learn! Listen to podcasts about your industry and business, watch how-to YouTube videos, and sign up for workshops and programs with your favourite educators. This will ensure you're constantly evolving and streamlining your business.
- Don't try to do everything overnight. It takes time to build a business that serves you. Do what feels right and leave behind the rest.
