Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Pfeiffer, owner of Salvage Restorations, located in Calgary, AB, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I specialize in furniture restoration and spray finishing. I have always loved interior design, art, and getting my hands dirty. I spent a lot of my life trying to find the “job” I was meant to be and instead turned my passion into a career.
Tell us about yourself
I find a lot of self-accomplishment in my work, and I find it feeds my soul. I love finding inspiration and transforming furniture into something that doesn’t just look beautiful but feels it. I started refinishing 12 years ago when we purchased our home. We went from a two-bedroom apartment to a four-bedroom started home. Being a young family, we had to be resourceful, so the majority of our furniture I picked up off Kijiji and refinished. When I was on maternity leave with our second child, I decided to pick up some furniture to flip and supplement our income. Years later, my daughter is nine, and I never went back to “work.” I do furniture full time. I still enjoy it and feel this was what I was truly meant to do.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishments have been turning my business into a full-time job and managing to survive through COVID, which was a challenge.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest part of being a business owner would’ve been when I decided to turn my hobby into a business. Working 12+ hour days seven days a week getting furniture done and posted to attract potential clients and get my name out there.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
You get back what you put in. No one will ever work as hard for your business as you do. It’s ok to make mistakes; that’s how we grow, but never bite off more than you can chew.
