Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal and business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amanda Herr, Owner and CEO of Amanda Herr Coaching, located in Macomb, MI, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I empower women to succeed in business on their own terms. Whether they are in a corporate position or running their own business, I help them create the success they dream of. My clients are talented women looking to take their careers to the next level. I support them with private coaching, group cohorts, online courses, and retreats.

Tell us about yourself

I am a former Vice President of Advertising for CNN. I had an amazing career there, with more ahead of me. However, I wasn't fulfilled. I realized just because I was good at the job, it didn't mean that was the career for me. I spent time analyzing what I loved about my position and what I didn't love about my position. When I was sure of what I wanted next, I made my move. That was in 2014. Since then, I have created two successful companies. Digital Desk, a digital marketing agency, and Amanda Herr Coaching. Amanda Herr Coaching is where I spend most of my time these days. It's my passion. I want to wake up every day and know I am helping to make a difference for women. I have been blessed with a 30+ year career, and I know what it takes to be successful in corporate and as an entrepreneur. I want other women to know that they can indeed make their dreams happen.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is to have built a career that feeds my soul. When I was in corporate, I was very successful. However, I didn't feel like I was making a difference. I'm a mission-oriented person. The fact that I can say I have helped many succeed in the career of their dreams so that they can, in turn, wake up happy, enjoy their lives and find balance is the biggest accomplishment I have achieved as a business owner.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing as a business owner is creating your own path. What I do does not come with an instruction manual. I have literally laid every brick in my yellow brick road. It has been difficult at times; however, as I come up on my 10-year anniversary soon, I realize...I wouldn't change a thing. I love those darn bricks.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. When you are starting your business, make sure that you are ready. By that, I mean emotionally & financially. It can take 2-5 years to turn a robust profit. Be ready for that. It could be faster; it could be slower. Many businesses fail because they don't prepare for this.
  2. Running your own business can be empowering. However, it can be lonely as well. Surround yourself with others who are like-minded and also running businesses. Do not look to your employees to fill this void. You need to connect with other leaders who are doing the same things you are with the same stress and celebration you have.
  3. Nothing will grow your business faster than networking. Whether it's virtual or in-person, put yourself out there. Advertising is wonderful but expensive, and it is hard to nail down the right target audience quickly. Networking puts you front of mind to those who may need your product or service or know others that do. Note: DO not over network to the point you can't get work done; however, make sure you take enough time every week to fit networking in.
