Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alyssa Broadwater, Founder of Alyssa Broadwater RD, located in Dublin, OH, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I run an in-person and virtual private nutrition practice focusing on fertility, prenatal, and postpartum nutrition. I support women and couples across Ohio and the U.S. with fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum nutrition. My customers include those looking to maximize health going into pregnancy, improve fertility, reduce the risk of complications during pregnancy, manage medical conditions, and recover well postpartum.

Tell us about yourself

As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, when I started specializing in fertility, pregnancy, and postpartum nutrition, the lack of practical, safe, and evidence-based information I found shocked me. If I wasn't clear about the importance of certain micronutrients, that just taking a prenatal vitamin won't cover your essential nutrient needs, or that nutrition and lifestyle can make a significant impact on fertility, then many other women might be missing out on this vital information too. This is arguably the time in life when nutrition matters most, but few providers talk much about pregnancy nutrition at all. That's what motivated me to work with all of my amazing clients. I know we're having a very real impact on parents' health and the long-term health of future generations.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Seeing couples conceive after months or years of trying unsuccessfully and seeing the emotion in new parents after having a healthy baby are the things that keep me going day after day. Witnessing those accomplishments will never get old.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing about being a business owner is the desk work side of things. I'd love not to have to worry about bookkeeping, marketing, etc., and just spend all of my time helping clients directly.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Be clear in your vision. It may take time to figure out what that is but have an idea of what exactly you're working toward.
  2. Outsource. You only have so much time and energy, so focus on the things you're good at and outsource the other stuff when possible.
  3. Do what you think is right without too much influence from what everyone else is doing.
