Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Altovise Pelzer, Founder of Altovise Unmuted, located in Elkton, MD, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I unmute the voice of women who are ready to speak up about what has kept them silent for way too long. My vision is to be the world’s leading personal development company providing education, tools, and platforms that amplify the voices of the marginalized and disenfranchised, enabling them to create and build within their communities. My clientele is women who have started a business and are looking to take it to a new level.

Tell us about yourself

The spark that started it all came from a conversation that I had with my oldest daughter. It was the first time I allowed myself to be unmuted about being molested as a child. Later my daughter, who had also been molested, told me that that was the moment she was most proud of when it came to me. She said that it made her feel like she wasn’t alone. That started a journey that included publishing books, hosting The #SpeakEasy Podcast, and being a consultant for others to become unmuted. As an award-winning author and speaker, I found myself on platforms that allowed me to be an influence on other women and men. I still receive messages today from some of the clients that I first worked with as a consultant who continue to tap into the lessons that I shared.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is my journey has inspired my children because I did it as a single mother of four. They’ve watched the journey, been an active part of the journey, and have used it as inspiration in their own lives. Unfortunately, there are many entrepreneurs whose families fall apart while they are starting a business. When those tough moments arose in my journey, I decided to take a step back to do what was best for my family.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things to handle as a business owner is being in the moment. Everything in the entrepreneurial journey points to where we started or where we are going, which often leaves little time to check in on where we are. People will have a five-year goal or a ten-year goal while no clear goal for their daily activities. It leads to people doing work they could have delegated to someone else, or they fall victim to procrastination. With over 15 years of experience in retail, I see the value in having daily goals. In retail, they check their numbers three times a day and check emails only once or twice. In retail, the schedule is created in a way that allows them to hit the daily goal best. When you have daily expectations, they allow you to achieve that goal and surpass it.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Do a purge to see what you already have. (Oftentimes, people have a bunch of resources stored on laptops and within books that they haven’t used).
  2. Take inventory of your time.
  3. Be clear about what you bring to the table. (Experience, education, time, and energy).
  4. Be honest about what you can and can’t do on your own.
