Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in professional development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Altavese Dilworth, founder of Altavese Loraine Career Consultant for Professionals, located in Decatur, GA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am the founder of Altavese Loraine Career Consultant for Professionals, and I am extremely passionate about seeing women flourishing in the workplace. I want every woman to see themselves as a leader regardless of their professional title. I work with individuals to help them navigate their career journey. My favorite part is seeing my clients have their "lightbulb moment"! This is when they finally have clarity on their next steps, and it's the moment that brings me so much joy!

Tell us about yourself

I have always been the "go-to girlfriend" whenever a friend or a friend of a friend needed help writing their resume or wanted my advice on career-related issues. I am not particularly sure why I was sought out for these situations, however, I absolutely loved it. So when COVID hit in 2020, and I had nothing but time, I decided that it was time to monetize what brings me joy.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Continuing to learn and grow. Every time I complete an assignment with a client, I always look back and ask myself what went well, what I should do differently next time, and what steps I should eliminate going forward. This allows me the opportunity to continue improving my process so that I don't become stagnant.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Realizing that entrepreneurship is not a 9-5. You are your company, and you are never really off. However, in order to preserve your sanity, it is important to create healthy boundaries.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to take the first step.
  2. Remember that it does not matter how many people are doing the same thing you want to do, there is an audience for you.
  3. Surround sound with like-minded individuals who will not only cheer you on but hold you accountable when you begin to steer away from your goal.
