Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in business development but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Almira Bardai, Founder & CEO of Almira Bardai PR & Consulting, located in Richmond, British Columbia, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I have 2 businesses - a public relations agency and a coaching company. My PR agency, Almira Bardai PR, works with entrepreneurs and c-suite executives to build their brand, PR, and thought leadership. On the coaching side - I work with female entrepreneurs to grow and scale their businesses (to 6/multi-6 figures) and their visibility.
Tell us about yourself
I'm actually an accidental entrepreneur. I moved back to Canada after a number of years abroad, in the UK, Australia, and South Africa (all working in senior-level PR roles). When I came back, I was told I'd been gone for too long and no longer had relevant experience. So I started doing PR consulting, and it snowballed into a large, multi-national PR agency. I sold that company in 2018 and started this boutique agency, and I also parlayed my years of entrepreneurial experience into a coaching company. My motivation in working with all my clients - is seeing their success. Like on my agency side - managing a brand build, getting tons of PR coverage, and placement in Entrepreneur. And on the coaching side - after just one session, one of my private clients turned her business into a profitable one! Another client stepped into her CEO's energy and doubled her business in 30 days. I'm honored to support their amazing work and be a catalyst.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Seeing my clients and team succeed and have massive breakthroughs and successes. It's what drives me. Also, on the team side - providing awesome job opportunities for so many women (I've always employed women). When I look at all the top PR people in Canada, they've usually worked with/for my companies, and it's so cool to see their success.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
That it all rests on me - I'm the rainmaker and the driver, which is exciting because I get to create and own my own destiny.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- First of all - just do it. If you've been thinking about it for a while, take the leap, even if you start it as a side hustle. Entrepreneurship is such a rewarding journey.
- Get a coach, someone who's done it before and who can guide you and be your sounding board. It's invaluable.
- Lastly - keep an eye on your profit. It's not just about revenue - it's about profit.
