Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Leticia Goyette, Owner of Alma Retro Crochet, located in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, QC, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Knitwear, Crochet, and Home Decor is our business.

Tell us about yourself

We are a family of knitters. I've been knitting since I was eight years old. My grandma taught me, and my mother, aunts, and cousins have been knitting since I can remember, but it was until 2012 that I started building my brand as Alma Retro, and in 2018 I started to sell on Etsy, literally, I had no idea how this work, but I'm glad I did because one step at a time I have been learning new ways of developing my skills and I'm always challenging myself to offer my customers only the best.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as business owner is when I have reached 2000 sales on Etsy and when my shop was published in the local newspaper.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things you'll have to face as a business owner is dealing with the unknown. Every day there will be new challenges and obstacles to deal with. Business is never predictable, no matter how prepared you are.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Develop a plan: Your plan should define any opportunities you've identified, clearly state your mission, describe your target, establish measurable goals, and set deadlines for each milestone along the way.
  2. Networking: Be your own brand ambassador, touting the benefits of working with your business and showing why people should give you a chance.
  3. Find a healthy work-life balance: It's paramount to find a healthy work-life balance. You might believe you need that perpetual hustle to stay sharp and succeed, but that pace can and will burn you out, ultimately limiting how much you can achieve if you don't take time for yourself.
