What's your business, and who are your customers?

I started my business after years of struggling to find makeup that complimented my dark complexion. Consequently, I wanted to create makeup for people of all skin tones and heritage. Anyone can wear our product and feel beautiful.

Tell us about yourself

I graduated from the University of Rhode Island and began a career in banking. During that time, I started a side business selling beauty products for brands such as Mary Kay, Avon, and others. Over time, it became evident there was an extensive lack of diversity in the beauty industry. It was not inclusive. I then decided to create products that would compliment all skin tones. More importantly, I wanted to create a hydrating formula that would last all day, so soft on the lips; you'd forget that you're wearing it.

My motivation is my clients' satisfaction and feedback. I work tirelessly to always provide the best experience, from the website design to the packaging and unboxing of every purchase.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

I am very proud of our lipstick collection. The matte formula and beautiful shades of reds, pink, orange, blue, green, and nudes were inspired by my African heritage. The inspiration came from Africa's rich culture, nature, colors, and people; think jewels, beads, safari, flowers, cloths. It took two years of trial and error, travel abroad to meet suppliers, and test formulas in order to develop the right recipe along with a range of shades that would suit all complexions.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Things such as financing, logistics, and staying motivated can be challenging, so it's important to have a business plan as your roadmap. It's equally as important to have a solid marketing plan in order to get noticed and connect with your target customers.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you're already a business owner, chances are you had great ideas when you first started, and hopefully, you wrote them in your business plan; that is a precious tool. Refer to it often as it's the roadmap you designed when you had your business idea. Use it to reassess which direction you should go and make adjustments. For instance, I had to adjust my business due to COVID-19.
  2. Do not copy a business because someone else seems to be doing well in theirs. Find a way to start a business in an area that you're passionate about.
  3. Lastly, don't wait; start now with what you have on hand; with hard work, your business will build itself up.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Always aspire to provide great quality products or services and never underestimate the power of great customer service. Customers will keep coming back to where they feel valued.
