Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Allison Jandu, Founder of Potty Training Consultant LLC, located in Frederick, MD, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am the owner and founder of Potty Training Consultant, LLC. We provide virtual support to families needing help potty training their children through online courses and one-on-one consultations. Our customers are parents or caregivers of young children who are struggling with the potty training milestone. They may have tried before without success, have a child with special needs, specific issues they can't seem to resolve on their own, or just don't know where to start! We've worked with families of children anywhere between the ages of 15 months and 20 years old of all abilities.
Tell us about yourself
I never imagined that I would be making a living talking about bodily functions all day, every day! I was originally a scientist. My degree is in Forensic Science, so I have a strong background in chemistry and biology. Before starting this business, I was working in a laboratory that did testing for companies such as NASA, Northrop Grumman, and Lockheed Martin. After becoming a mom, my priorities shifted. I realized that my true calling was motherhood and everything involved with it. I actually loved potty training my son (who is now 8 years old). I had such a great experience with it that friends and family started asking me for help with their kids. Thus the idea of the Potty Training Consultant was born. There wasn't a reliable source of evidence-based information for parents, and I decided I wanted to create one. I poured all of my spare time into learning as much as I could about potty training, early childhood development, and human behavior/psychology - over 5,000 hours, in fact! Being a science-minded individual, I love knowing the WHY behind the solutions, and that's what I try to bring to my clients. Hearing their success stories is what keeps me going!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I'd say my biggest accomplishment has been creating a successful business where we've now worked with over 6,000 families AND have grown to a network of 12 consultants all over the world with our certification program. We have Potty Training Consultant representation on 4 continents now!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
I think the biggest challenge can be time management. Being a small business owner means you never truly have a day off. It can be difficult to set boundaries between work and family life. Fortunately, in the past year, I was lucky to find an amazing business manager who makes that possible for me again! But the successful operation of the business is always in the back of your mind.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Choose something that is niche and that you are passionate about.
- Become an expert. Pour all your spare time into researching as much as you can about the subject BEFORE you start the business, so you have credibility going in.
- Be sure you nail down and fully understand your ideal client demographic.
