Build Your Ideal Freelance Writing Business - Jessica Walrack
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jessica Walrack, Founder of All Things Freelance Writing, located in Boise, ID, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a freelance finance blog writer/journalist and the founder of All Things Freelance Writing. I write blogs for companies that want to educate their audiences about business or personal finance topics, including The Balance, Investopedia, CBS News MoneyWatch, and US News and World. Additionally, my company, All Things Freelance Writing, is an online community that helps writers build their ideal businesses. We offer a blog, podcast, and courses along with social communities.
Tell us about yourself
I started freelance writing about 10 years ago because I wanted to spend more time with my family and felt unfulfilled in a corporate job. It has unlocked an incredible amount of freedom and independence for me. My family has been able to travel and live in 13 countries, but most importantly, we get to spend our days together. Now, I’ve built All Things Freelance Writing to help others who desire that freedom and independence. Our community helps them to build their ideal writing businesses.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Replacing my full-time income was my initial biggest accomplishment that set me free. More than doubling it in the years to come was the icing on the cake. Now, helping others do so is the cherry on top.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
Getting the ball rolling. It’s a grind in the beginning to build a reputation and a network that will drive clients to you. Outbound is a lot of work but can eventually be replaced by inbound. There’s a light at the end of the tunnel!
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Reverse engineer from your ideal business. Write down how much you want to make, how often you want to work, and who you want to work with, then figure out what you need to do from there.
- Choose a niche. We live in a world that is saturated with businesses. To stand out, you need to solve a specific problem for a specific audience. Become an expert at something for someone, and your demand/income will grow.
- Self-promote. It can be uncomfortable, but you have to get the word out about who you are and what you’re doing. Social media makes it much easier and more affordable to do these days.
