Lettering, Laughs, Praise & Positivity - All She Wrote Notes

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Maghon Taylor, Founder of All She Wrote Notes, located in Gibsonville, NC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

All She Wrote Notes is a hand lettering and calligraphy studio that is both an e-commerce site and a storefront in North Carolina. I make and create gift items, I've written four books, and we have a studio and storefront where people come to take classes each week. Our best customers are women who love bright colors, celebrating, and positivity.

Tell us about yourself

I have always been a creative spirit, and even from a young age, I watched my grandmother make a career in her art. When I started my company in 2013, I knew I was on a mission to spread happiness through my handwriting. I enjoy the art I get to make, and I especially love that I am able to put positive messaging out into what can sometimes be a very negative world.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Well, I've written four books, and I've had my art sold with national brands like Walmart and QVC, but I think I am most proud of our studio that I purchased on my own and renovated alongside my dad (working in construction here) for 18 months. This building is absolutely my happy place, and I love the energy that we bring to our small town and to the hundreds of people who visit us each month. My faith is a huge part of my life and my business and I feel like I was led right to this corner for a much larger purpose than anything I could have ever imagined.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

I've always tried my best to pay cash for my business and not take on debt in the process. As we have grown into more of our own manufacturing, our cash flow continues to be one of my biggest challenges, but I am determined to stay true to my values, and I appreciate feeling lean and not strapped by mortgage or loan payments.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Put yourself out there to your friends first! Your first customers will likely be your Facebook friends or people from church. Let them cheer you on and invite them to support you.
  2. Keep your eyes on your own paper. You don't need to compare your journey to anyone else. We are all on our own individual paths, and you are not behind when you are running your own race.
  3. It's okay to grow slow and steady. A lot of the businesses I looked up to early on have already burned out. They scaled and grew super quickly and got into debt, and now many aren't even in business anymore. Our growth has been slow and steady, and I have continued to show up every day for nine years with faith that we are right where we are supposed to be.
