Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in coach but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alisha Fisher, founder of Inspire Intimacy, located in Peterborough, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am an International Award Winning Speaker, Ph.D. Human Sexuality Student and Relationship Coach who has been involved in the field of Sexology and Sexual Violence for over a decade. I work with individuals and people in relationships to enhance their intimate lifestyles, as well as speaking on numerous panels and to communities about my role in creating more fulfilling relationships with ourselves and others. My enthusiasm for combining research and trauma-informed practices into sexual connection has been the driving force for my presentations, workshops, and coaching sessions.

Tell us about yourself

I have always had a passion for understanding our intimate relationships with ourselves and other people, but I did not realize till the second year of university that I could turn this passion into a business. I love inspiring others to find intimate connections in their lives and to unpack some of the harmful lessons we learn about love and sex. Every single workshop, coaching session, or consultant work that I engage in leaves me invigorated and motivated to keep spreading knowledge about our love life and sexual health.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

As much as I would love to recall being on the front page of my local newspaper and being interviewed on the CBC for my international speaking award for my research, I always think back to that first step in taking this career as a Relationship Coach and Consultant seriously. It does not matter if I'm getting on stage to speak to hundreds of people or stepping into a quiet space with a client; the shock of this being my time to shine and provide hope and guidance for folks is always an accomplishment I cherish.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Balance is a huge priority when it comes to being a business owner. We live in a culture that tells us to push and hustle, but we need to remember that burnout is our biggest weapon. Bringing a deep sense of mindfulness to each activity, I am engaging in (which includes schooling, teaching, leading workshops, professional development, and of course, self-care) allows me to focus and pace myself in this hectic world.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Listen to your passion; this is what is going to keep you going on the dark days and growing on the bright days. Your passion is what brought you here in the first place, so do not lose it.
  2. Connect with like-minded business people. Who is someone in your field that you look up to? Now connect with them and those around them. A good business leader is someone who knows how to uplift others, not bring them down.
  3. Do not be afraid to be creative and maybe a little unconventional. Explore different marketing options. I could not tell you how many small businesses I have seen take off from one TikTok post or connecting at local events.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Running a business is not a one-and-done venture; it requires constant evaluation and growth. I am very privileged to have the incredible support and learning circles connected to me, as I always gain so much inspiration and intellect in the field from them.
