Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health and wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Dr. Joseph Rosi II, Founder and Owner of Alinea Performance, located in Tampa, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

We are a performance orthopedic and male pelvic health physical therapy practice. We work with active adults to help them decrease pain, recover from an injury, and increase performance. We also specialize in treating male pelvic health conditions such as pelvic pain, urinary incontinence, and erectile dysfunction.

Tell us about yourself

I first became interested in the human body and ultimately obtained my Doctorate in Physical Therapy (DPT). From there, I was working with athletes, especially lifters, as I had both personal and professional experience in powerlifting when I recognized a consistent and common problem - most men don't know how to brace correctly, which commonly leads to hernias. These same problems would naturally lead to incontinence in females, but we males have a second block to limit us from experiencing incontinence - the prostate.

As I dove further into treating men with bracing issues, I quickly realized how similar treating incontinence and other male pelvic health conditions became. I originally got started working for myself as I was unhappy working at other clinics. I was unhappy because I naturally looked to make things more efficient, and I was constantly looking to improve the way we did things. The problem was most of these companies got "comfortable" and didn't really want to change or improve, and I quickly realized my only option was to go out on my own. Now I am motivated each day by finding ways to deliver a better service for less. Less of a cost for consumers and less of an operational drag on the company and staff.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment so far is truly staying solvent. I don't come from a family of entrepreneurs, and I didn't have my family's support either, so the fact that I was able to start as a guy with no money, no book of business, or anything, and I was able to grow to 4 locations without investors, I am proud of that accomplishment.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

Wearing all the hats, knowing when you need to wear each hat, and being 100% objective with that. And it can get lonely at times, as many people without businesses won't understand.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. If you wait until you are ready, you've waited too long.
  2. Don't just copy competitors, be the company that your competitors want to copy.
  3. Make sure you always look at every aspect of the business through everyone's lens and not just from your vantage point. What would you want as the customer? How would you want the benefits/culture to be if you were brand new to the company but had no interest in owning it? If you look at everything from every vantage point, the only question you really need to ask yourself is, what can be better? Then you focus on those things, and you are already miles ahead of everyone else, but more importantly, your company will continue to grow.
  4. Don't get caught up comparing your level 1 to someone else's level 10. If you look for a mentor, find one who is one or maybe two steps ahead so it seems more achievable. If not, you may get overwhelmed and get frustrated.
