Unlistd - Alexandra Apple
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in personal care but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexandra Apple, owner of Unlistd, located in Montréal, QC, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
My business is a creative hub of local art and beauty. A collective of employees, renters, artists, etc., All are serving a creative group of clients that love self-expression!
Tell us about yourself
I got started owning my own salon because I couldn't find a salon I was inspired by. so I started my own in my apartment in 2012! I a motivated most by creating the salon/boutique I wish I could find. Inspired by artist markets and cozy private salons, I wanted to create a larger version of everything I love in one place.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Our recent upgrade from 800 sq. ft. to 3000! The boutique expansion and going from the second level to the first floor!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Take care of yourself. Balance is hard when you own a business. Some weeks feel slow and like there's not much to do, and in others, your list never ends. You can technically never stop working, but then you start to resent your business. It's important to find joy outside of work, but it's very hard sometimes because you often feel one with your business.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Take risks! Trust your gut! When you make a mistake, just keep going!
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Most of us have no idea what we are doing; we just have the will to figure it out!
