Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in fine arts but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Schmaltz, based in Hamilton, ON, Canada.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Canadian artist, born in Toronto, now living and working in Hamilton, ON. My paintings are full of whimsy and provide a glimpse into my world. I often create works that speak to current events, pop culture, and mental health, as well as pieces that celebrate the beauty of life and womanhood. My main mediums of choice are acrylic on canvas as well as digital art. My clients range! They are generally 30+, more often than not women. Art lovers, for sure!
Tell us about yourself
I am a self-taught artist. I gave birth to my second child, a boy, right when COVID-19 put everyone on lockdown. During sleepless nights with my new baby, I started painting, a hobby that I have not had much time to do while raising my 3-year-old daughter and working full-time in a marketing role. After some reluctance, I began sharing my artwork online. I am proud to say that I have now created a name for myself in the art community. Most importantly, though, I have found a passion that fills my heart with joy and helps me maintain my sanity during this unprecedented time.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Winning the Hamilton Battle of the Brushes and being featured in several art shows. Nothing beats the feeling of knowing your work is out there being enjoyed by the public!
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The hardest thing for me has been not having anyone to bounce ideas off of who is really in the mix of the business. Sure, I can talk to friends, family, and my spouse, but they are not as invested as me. I find brainstorming sessions and talking through my thoughts are how I get my best ideas.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
My top tip is to: Say yes to everything - even if you don't know how to do something, just try!
