Wit & Reason - Alex Honigman

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in mental wellness but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Honigman, executive coach at Wit & Reason, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a Psychotherapist & Clinical Director of Wit & Reason. We work to make mental health accessible. Whether it’s at home in relations or at work, psychology is in everything we do. At Wit & Reason, we provide therapy, training, or development for all aspects of life. We are transparent in our fight for equity, inclusion, and Racial Justice. To ignore is to maintain the systemic issues that perpetuate the traumas of today. With that, I currently serve people throughout the Mid-Atlantic and California.

Tell us about yourself

Wit & Reason is mental health done right. I had been working for a large healthcare provider hearing the complaints around accessibility, cost, lack of diversity, and needing consistency and a place/space to improve their well-being. Therapists that were versed in cultural experiences and understanding and especially those who can guide others in finding their voice to advocate and participate in making a difference or even just having difficult conversations around the dinner table.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We continue to expand and find ways to honor both those seeking services and those providing. For those in need of therapy, we provide several different services, but each therapist additionally takes on lower costs regarding causes they believe in, like Healthcare Providers, BLM Protestors, POCs in predominantly White spaces, or survivors of abuse.

For our employees, we emphasize the need for change in the mental health industry. So many groups or private practices exploit those in helping professions with minimal pay and ridiculous expectations. We provide a space for our employees to grow and engage truly. To have autonomy but maintain their core values and engagement with fellow clinicians.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

IT NEVER ENDS!! But it’s also a blessing. I am a true believer in the process of therapy, healing, and growth. The more we can do to help, the better.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. It will never FEEL like the right time. So don’t look for the opening or perfect moment to jump in.
  2. Don’t keep it in your head. Write it down, talk it out with others, ask questions, gain new skills and knowledge but also realize you can’t prepare for it all.
  3. Be patient, so many missteps are made in panic. Be consistent, thoughtful, and slow things down. So many start-ups fail after the launch because they take on too much.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

Just remember all growth comes from discomfort… going out on your own might have some pain points, but the growth potential is endless.
