Get Started - Agents of Change Social Work Test Prep

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in training and education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Meagan Mitchell, founder of Agents of Change Social Work Test Prep, located in Washington, DC, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Agents of Change is a highly engaging visual and auditory test preparation platform. Currently, we focus on preparing students for the Bachelor, Master, and Clinical ASWB exams, which Social Workers are required to take to acquire their licensure at these levels.

Tell us about yourself

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who is very passionate about education and finding the right modalities to reach students effectively. I've been providing individualized and group test prep for the ASWB exam for over five years and have been involved in education for more than ten years. My business started small by helping social workers I know prepare 1:1 for their exams. Then, I began to offer group study sessions which led ultimately to a robust course platform, podcast, YouTube channel, and much more! I'm motivated each and every day by my students who pass their exams after struggling with other materials that don't match their learning styles.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment is creating free materials via my YouTube channel, Podcast, Blog, and website that have been used by hundreds of thousands of social workers! This blows my mind every single day and is incredibly important to me as I truly want to make my materials as accessible as possible to as many social workers as possible.

What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?

There are only 24 hours in the day! My husband (who helps with the technical and business side of Agents of Change) and I have so many ideas for how we want to continue to grow our business and deliver on our mission, but as a business owner who still has a full-time job, you have to be a relentless prioritizer. What 20% of opportunities will drive 80% of the value for your business?

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Ask yourself: What problem are you passionate about solving? For me, it was democratizing access to social work exam materials and offering materials that supported individuals with more visual and auditory learning styles like me. I recognized this problem when I was studying for my licensing exams, and I am still working to solve it!
  2. Be consistent: There will be ups and downs in every business. Keep true to your mission and dedicate a consistent number of hours each week (and weekend) to your business. While this won't guarantee you'll be successful, it will give you a better chance.
  3. Find a co-founder and build a supportive network: Starting a business is a challenge mentally, emotionally, and even physically. It's hard to overstate the importance of having a partner (or partners) in your journey. They will help lift you up when you stumble and bring diversity to the team!
