Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in freelancing but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Penny Sadler, Founder of Adventures of a Carry-on, located in Dallas, TX, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
I'm a freelance writer and journalist writing about wine, culture, adventure, and more, through the lens of travel. My customers are not really customers but editors, publishers, and readers looking for the type of content/articles I write. I write about destinations, food, culture, and wine 101 information.
Tell us about yourself
My background is in video production–I was and still am a professional hair and makeup artist. This is my bread-and-butter money. The money that allows me to travel. About 10 years ago, I wanted to do something creative that was not in any way related to my day job. I started a travel blog that was mainly photographed from my trips to Italy. That sort of took off on its own, and I began to travel more. My photo stories became articles, and soon I was writing for other websites, not only my own. What motivates me each day is my innate curiosity about how things work and what makes people tick. I love a good story, both listening and telling them. Travel is life to me and helps me tap into what I call my true self more...it's basically the place where the magic just happens.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
As a freelance writer, I feel like every time a new pitch is accepted, that's a big win. It takes persistence and a thick skin to keep pitching when you only hear crickets. Of course, that's sort of ongoing. This year I was able to donate some time to a non-profit that helps children around the world living in war zones. I wrote some press releases that led to some big news coverage, and that, of course, brings more money that is donated to these charities, like Children in Conflict. It felt good to be able to help. I also taught a travel writing 101 class, and a couple of attendees have stayed in touch with me, which is about the best validation I could have.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
You can never call in sick.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Today things are so competitive. I'd say number one, know yourself, who you are and what you want. Two: What need can you fill or what question can you answer for people? Do that, and you've likely got a winning plan. And finally, have a plan! Maybe that should be number two!
