Admission to a successful Future - Pathway Admissions
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in academic coaching, but not sure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alexandra Wax founding partner of Pathway Admissions, LLC. Alexandra has a Master's degree in educational leadership and is based in Houston, Texas USA.
What's your business and who are your customers?
We work to help students and their families navigate the college process, helping them find their best fit academically, social-emotionally, and financially, so that students can be happy and successful in pursuing their dreams!
Tell us about yourself
I have worked in the field of test prep and college admissions for many years, and just recently went out on my own with a partner. I love seeing my students go on this journey because they discover so much about themselves and it can be so empowering to find that perfect fit. When they're excited to tell their stories and feel as if they can show off who they are and what matters to them, I know I'm in the right field, despite the late nights and difficult moments!
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
The biggest accomplishment is the referral network we've built, especially when students refer us to their friends: that means we are doing our jobs right and providing the best possible service in a difficult arena for our students and families.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
The toughest thing is the time! It's hard to balance seeing clients, doing the admin tasks and marketing that comes with our work, and having time for work-life balance. I also have trouble turning down work, even when I'm full because as a business owner I don't want to hurt any potential referral stream.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Have confidence! I wasn't sure I was ready to go off on my own, rather than continuing my work for a company, but I'm so glad I did
- Relationships matter. People want to work with those they trust and that's what's most important. Always be honest, and always admit when you don't know something! Better to show humility that way than give wrong info that could be harmful.
- Never stop learning. Being an expert in any field is a commodity, so make yourself an expert in your niche, no matter how small. You'll find your customer there!
What are some of the things you put in place to maintain a healthy work/life balance?
Family dinner every night. My students often need to meet with me in the evenings and afternoons, when there isn't school that they're busy with. But I always take an hour or two off to be with the people I love.
