Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Amira Drori, CEO of AD Bookkeeping, located in San Diego, CA, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Boutique Bookkeeping Firm. We are not accountants and do not take care of taxes, but we take care of financial organization so our clients (small/medium business owners) can have a better snapshot of their business and how they are making and spending their money. Our expertise is supporting service-based industries, and we really take pride in our one on one approach, it is very personal, and I communicate directly with all of my clients.

Tell us about yourself

I've been working for large corporations for more than 15 years. I have always found myself climbing to the top in the financial departments working directly under the CFOs, and then having that position myself before deciding to start my own business. My husband gave me the push, actually. He has been self-employed, owning his own business for a while, and he helped guide me toward that reality.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

My biggest accomplishment as a business owner is being able to help support my family not only financially but being more available on a physical and emotional level as well. I was a single mom for eight years. I had to work in the corporate world in order to survive and take care of my girls. Still, now that I have more freedom, I can be there for them in ways I was never able to before, and I am so grateful for that.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things for me, being a business owner, is definitely structuring my time wisely. My business runs on a virtual platform, and I can work wherever, so it definitely can get challenging when there are many household distractions around. Time management is for sure important.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Don't be afraid to talk to people who have been in your shoes. Lots of people are always happy to help and give advice.
  2. Create a loving, supportive environment.
  3. Even though it is all exciting and challenging in the beginning, take care not to overexert yourself. Be kind to yourself and trust that the universe will lead you.
