Spreading the Joy of Dance - Academic Network of Dance
Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in dance education but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Alex Morel and Desiree Godsell, Founders of Academic Network of Dance, located in Jersey City, NJ, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
The Academic Network of Dance is a virtual dance company with a focus on cultural awareness and growth through the art of dance. Our customers are dance schools, teachers, and dancers worldwide.
Tell us about yourself
We, Alex Morel and Desiree Godsell, have been a part of the Afro-Latin dance network for many years. Our combined dance training includes ballet, jazz, tap, salsa, merengue, bachata, cha-cha, Latin hustle, Zouk, and kizomba (to name a few). Desiree went to school for dance, and Alex began formal training in his mid-twenties. We both have a very strong passion for dance, and with time, our love has grown and expanded to share that love and passion with the world. The importance of cultural awareness, the joy of dance and what it does to one's physical and mental health, the music, and the impact on the world all motivate us to continue doing what we do. That and the love that our followers, students, and dance community express toward us.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Creating an impact not only in the world of Afro-Latin dancing via our dance workshops and performances but also through various non-dance organizations. Now with the age of social media, our reach has expanded.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
Time time time! Managing and balancing our schedules and workload and prioritizing what we feel adds more value to both our careers and the world. A lot of what we do is also demanding on our bodies due to a hectic travel schedule, so it can put our bodies through quite a toll.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Understand your why - what motivates you to start your business, and what are some of your short and long terms goals?
- If you're running a business with a partner, ensure that there is a talk and even a written agreement of what each party wants and how the business should be run so you are on the same page.
- Be consistent and intentional to never lose sight of what you want to achieve.
