Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Joshua Jones, Owner and CEO of Above Ground Level - AGL Discs, located in Santa Cruz, CA, USA.
What's your business, and who are your customers?
We are a PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) approved GREEN manufacturer of disc golf discs and products. Our customers are anyone who appreciates frisbees, disc golf, and being outdoors.
Tell us about yourself
We love the idea of planting trees. So we name each disc after a different tree (we have 13 molds/trees now), and whenever we sell one - we provide you with a corresponding tree seed. That way, you can plant a tree yourself! If you choose not to, we can also plant one in your name. I think the idea behind planting a tree from seed is a truly selfless act. You will not be able to sit under the shade of that tree and read a book, as in - it's not for you... it's for future generations. So that is the motto behind Above Ground Level.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
I think my biggest accomplishment is really just getting to the point where the business can kind of run itself. I can take a step back and let it do its thing. I also think being able to stick to your ideas and follow through on them to create such an amazing community of disc golfers, team members, family, and just PEOPLE. I love the disc golf community, and I think that anyone that comes to a tournament can see the overall support we have for one another, so being a part of this sport's growth and helping more folks to become aware of this great sport will be my biggest accomplishment as a business owner. That and my daughter, at 10yrs old is practically the warehouse manager, or so people call her, so that is a huge accomplishment as well!
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
I think one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner is not having enough time! As a business owner that still works a full-time job, it makes you an excellent plate spinner... So we have multiple things going on all the time, and we have to keep them balanced. That can be tough. But leaning on the people that support you and learning when to ask for help is key.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
Get a group of people around you that are smart or smarter than you, learn to take the ego hat off, and work extremely hard.
Is there anything else you'd like to share?
Get outside, and play some disc golf!
