Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Abigail Fish, Founder of Swim Like A. Fish, located in Louisville, KY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Swim Like A. Fish is a virtual swim coaching business that aims to help swimmers and coaches everywhere get faster through our stroke technique resources. We offer many different training programs and coaching courses - including dryland training - that will help anyone take their swimming to the next level.

Tell us about yourself

I started working online in 2016 and fell in love with the ability to connect with people anytime and anywhere via the internet. On top of that, I've swam since I was 4 years old, so my love for the sport of swimming has been and always will be there. After I finished my collegiate swimming career at the University of Georgia, I started coaching and fell in love with the sport all over again - but this time from the other side of the pool deck. Each coaching job I took helped me learn more of the ins and outs of working online, and it all finally accumulated with my launching SLAF back in 2019!

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

That I've worked with people on 6 out of the 7 continents. The goal is to find someone in Antarctica that likes to swim, haha.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

It's not easy being a small business owner because, at the end of the day - everything falls back on you. You have to be very self-disciplined and organized to get things done, and also know what to prioritize versus not. You learn a lot about yourself when you work for yourself, and owning a business teaches you quickly how to set boundaries, goals, and expectations.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

Love what you do. It's so much easier to work on something - even if it's just mundane tasks if the subject is something you adore. Also, you need to know yourself. It's important to be humble in this process and know what you are good at and not good at. Running a small business, you have to wear a lot of hats, but it's also good to know when to bring someone in to help you versus running yourself into the ground to get a task done very inefficiently. Last tip, find a mentor or someone who has already done what you're looking to do. There are so many ways to run a small business now. Some people do it off of one social media platform - so figure out your business model and what you plan to do a little before you do it. It's always easier to learn from someone who has succeeded than recreate a wheel.
