What's your business, and who are your customers?
I operate several businesses:
- The Ski System is an online platform that provides strength and conditioning for winter athletes and ski enthusiasts. This is a membership-based service (www.getskisystem.com)
- The Mayn Idea Podcast airs weekly at 12 am on Tuesday morning Pacific Time. This podcast shares conversations about performance, art, wellness optimization, and attempts to understand the human experience better. Guests range from the former CEO of Equinox, Judy Turchin, to the 2022 ADCC World Champion, Amy Campo.
- Abe Maynard Coaching is an online personal training business where I coach individuals looking to improve their health, fitness, and lifestyle habits. Here I help my clients all over the world execute their training sessions virtually by guiding them in real-time and providing expert feedback.
Tell us about yourself
I've always been motivated to build a career that allows me time freedom, and control over my schedule. Ultimately I want the growth of my businesses to inspire other entrepreneurs looking to take an idea and realize its creation or function in the world.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
My biggest accomplishment would be making each of the three businesses profitable.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The discipline. If you don't want to show up, execute, find consistency, and see projects through, nobody will tell you otherwise. In the beginning, there's no team, no money, and no direction. You, as the entrepreneur, must create each of these, then establish systems around them so that others can replicate them with effectiveness.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- "Consistency is king": This is my motto for a very specific reason
motivation comes and goes. Some days you love what you're doing; some days, you want to close up shop and go work for someone else for a secure and reliable paycheck. Consistency trumps dip in motivation. Consistency allows you to move past the competition, and most importantly, it allows your consumers/audience/clients to rely on you. - Don't be afraid to quit a project if it means your resources (time and money) can be placed into another facet of your business with a greater outcome.
- Learn how to wear as many hats as you can, then start putting them on other people's heads. In the beginning, it's advantageous to do most things yourself. This way, you learn the ins and outs of your business and develop streamlined systems at a low cost. Once you hire new people, you won't have to pay them to create the systems. Instead, you can utilize their expertise to optimize the system further.
