What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a Master IEP Coach® who serves families whose children experience behavioral challenges within the public school system. I help them navigate the IEP/504 process so that their child gets appropriate support throughout their school day by guiding them to work collaboratively with their teams.
Tell us about yourself
I have worked within the public school system for over 20 years and have been fascinated by challenging behavior since day 1. As I continued to build my career, I was often frustrated by how the public school system didn't seem to really understand how to support children with challenging behavior. When I became a parent to a child with high behavioral needs, my whole world changed. That's when I discovered the impact of brain development on behavior, and I dove deep into learning more through books and training. At this time, I also began to understand just how focused on compliance the traditional school system was, which was contributing to why my students weren't making progress. As my own child began to make progress with overcoming behavioral challenges, I decided I wanted to help other parents to navigate the complex IEP process so that their children could make progress too. I'm deeply passionate about helping others understand behavior from a brain-based perspective and partnering with parents to help their child's IEP be developed from a brain-based perspective.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Helping a client get a win at the IEP table and feel more confident advocating for their children within the IEP process is my biggest accomplishment. I like nothing better than to walk out of an IEP meeting and have a parent feel excited that they were truly heard by the team and that they felt involved in the decision-making process.
What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?
The hardest thing about being a business owner is making sure I take care of the mundane logistical components of my business in addition to serving my clients.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start a business around something you're passionate about! It will help you get through the mundane parts of being a business owner.
- Use your business to fulfill a higher purpose than yourself. For me, this is helping as many families as I can to successfully navigate the IEP process so that more children can be as successful as possible.
- Find a network of like-minded business owners to share in the journey. I'm part of the Master IEP Coach® network, and it is like having coworkers alongside me in my business. We collaborate, strategize and learn together while all are working on our individual businesses.
