Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in food and beverage but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Daniel Gershon, Managing Owner of Aba’s Bagel Company, located in Toronto, ON, Canada.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

Our business is a family bakery serving freshly baked bagels and bread every morning. Our customers are our family too at this point, being open since 2005. We’ve grown up with the neighbourhood.

Tell us about yourself

My father built the place. It supported my family through tough times. My number one priority is to keep the lights on and serve great food.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

We were part of a franchise. We decided to part ways and started our own bakery. We opened our location in March 2019, which was the first month of covid. I created bagel packages for people to send to loved ones who can’t leave the house. We worked tirelessly. We survived the last three years. We can survive anything.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

Staffing and food costs. It has become very hard to make a profit on food without seemingly ripping off the customer.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Location.
  2. Keep costs down. Don’t over-stretch the bank.
  3. Start small, and let it grow. Then invest.
