What's your business, and who are your customers?
I am a coach. While I've worked with many extraordinary creatives one-on-one as a life and career coach, I'm probably best known for creating Superior Singing Method (SSM), the #1 online singing lesson program for many years running. SSM customers are simply people who want to sing better — from beginners to well-known professionals. My one-on-one life and career coaching clients tend to be creatives in the entertainment, tech, and music industries, respectively.
Tell us about yourself
Based on feedback from others and an assessment of my impact, I saw that I had a knack for inspiring people to greater heights in their lives, especially creatively. A buddy of mine had been dabbling in online marketing for a couple of years, and I suggested we do a training program. Since we both had training and experience singing — not only did our bands tour together previously, we had each formed bands and invited the other into it at different points in our music careers — I suggested we start with a singing training type program. And after a series of massive failures, over 2+ years, with what was then called The Singing Guide, eventually Superior Singing Method emerged.
What motivates me daily is inspiring others to reach their dreams and their highest potential while I seek to do the same in my own life. My two primary pursuits right now are life/career coaching and acting (most recently acting in Magnum P.I. on NBC). I like to stay in the trenches of my own outlandish pursuits while coaching others toward their own.
What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?
Most recognizable would be creating a multi-million dollar online singing business, Superior Singing Method, with an accompanied YouTube channel with over 50M views and 600K subscribers. But I'm more proud of the accomplishments of my individual coaching clients.
Here's one of many stories I could tell:
One, whom I'll call David, was producing $5K - $7K music videos and wanted to be at the top of that game as well as become an elite coach. Within a year, he was producing $1M+ in music videos for top artists. Fast forward some years later, he was coaching the most famous person on earth, with a full roster of elite clientele.
What's one of the hardest things that comes with being a business owner?
One of the biggest challenges of being an entrepreneur is the ebb and flow of clients and profitability. While we have a lot of influence over how things go in our businesses, there is much that is out of our control. It takes a lot of perseverance and fortitude. I think it's worth it, but it's not for the faint of heart.
What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?
- Start with something you love and are passionate about. That will sustain you in the rollercoaster of hard times.
- Partner with good people you love being around that share your vision. It's always more fun to win together than alone.
- Remember that the long game is the only game. Stick around long enough for the miracle(s) to occur.
