Bringing People Together - A4 Collective

Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jae Han, Founder of A4 Collective, located in Brooklyn, NY, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

A4 Collective is dedicated to bringing people together through classical music and the piano. Recognizing the value of building communities, A4 Collective strives to be a space beyond the pendulum of work and home, where people can meet, exchange ideas and grow through the context of music. A4 Collective offers live-music concerts, event space rentals for performances and rehearsals, piano tunings and repairs, as well as one-on-one piano lessons.

Tell us about yourself

I began A4 Collective because I felt there weren't any dedicated spaces for classical musicians to regularly meet with each other and share their craft. I am motivated by my own desires as a classical pianist to build a community of musicians and broaden the public reach of classical music. Introduced to the piano at the age of four, I have dedicated my life to the instrument through my work as a pianist, instructor (Steinway Educational Partner), piano tuner/technician, and apprentice piano rebuilder. A4 Collective reflects my love of classical music, the piano, and the joy of working with others.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

The sense of community I have begun to build amongst New York City classical musicians. I have met more musicians in the first six months of running A4 Collective than during the 12 years I have lived in NYC.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

One of the hardest things that come with running a business as a sole owner would be the constant multi-tasking that is required, especially when you're learning as you go.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Reach out to those who can provide guidance; learning from someone with experience will save you time and give you the confidence to make the next step.
  2. Set a budgeting plan where achievable short-term goals will prepare you for those long-term dreams.
  3. Business depends on people. To grow your community, network with those in your field and share your work through social media.
