Interested in starting your own entrepreneurial journey in health & nutrition but unsure what to expect? Then read up on our interview with Jacqueline Munoz, Owner of A Traveling Dietitian, located in Panama City Beach, FL, USA.

What's your business, and who are your customers?

I am a private practice Registered Dietitian that provides nutritional counseling. I educate and create personalized meal plans for my clients. I see a wide range of clients with various nutritional concerns. I can aid with disease-related nutrition therapy (Diabetic education, cardiac, oncology, etc.), weight loss or weight gain nutrition therapy, and sports nutrition.

Tell us about yourself

Growing up, I was heavily involved with sports, and naturally, I grew interested in health and nutrition. As I grew older, I really became intrigued with nutrition and the effects our diet can have on our health. This led me to become a Registered Dietitian.

Although my career specialty has changed over the years, I love all aspects of nutrition and being able to see a variety of patients. The challenge of figuring out what nutritional regimen works for an individual and being able to see the positive impact it can have on an individual's life is what motivates me every day. It is very rewarding to help someone change certain habits to better their health and have a better quality of life overall.

What's your biggest accomplishment as a business owner?

Although it may be small to some, being able to conquer the insurance world was my biggest accomplishment so far. Becoming credentialed and being able to accept insurance as a small private practice was such a long process but very satisfying when it was accomplished. This was an area I knew nothing about, so being able to teach myself the entire process was grueling but satisfying.

What's one of the hardest things that come with being a business owner?

The hardest thing is juggling many hats in the beginning. Some days I am a secretary, a medical biller, and other days I am a marketer and business owner. As you grow a business, you have to learn a lot of new skills (even some you don't necessarily like) and try to figure out a successful business model.

As most business owners have felt, it is very difficult in the beginning, and you often feel like you are working so hard and not going anywhere or making any profit. But usually, if you can endure those beginning pangs, you can come out successful in the end.

What are the top tips you'd give to anyone looking to start, run and grow a business today?

  1. Starting and growing a business takes a lot of work, but it is very fulfilling and can be successful if you stick it out.
  2. Don't let your business take control of your life. Stay balanced and make sure you are keeping healthy emotionally, mentally, and physically.

Is there anything else you'd like to share?

I love being a business owner and the flexibility it provides. It has been a grueling process, but it allows me to do what I love at my own pace.
